Sprintshift Hydraulic gear pump motor replacement.

So, all the new parts arrive today (fingers crossed). I have the following on order:
Relay
Accumulator
Pump and motor assembly
Pressure Sensor
More Titan CHF 11S fluid

Intermittent fault of refusing to shift gears has been ongoing for a few weeks. Steadily gotten worse. Changed the hydraulic fluid. Changed nothing.

Trouble I have now is my gears have come back online. Everything works all the way through 1 - 6 and R. It just wont shift to A.
This is a pain in the arse because how do I now diagnose the issue? All least when it was stuck in 1st I had a chance at pinpointing the problem but now it's just a random guess. I daren't take it out on the road because I know what will happen. I'll get stuck and have to call the RAC who are now less use than a fart in an astronaut suit. Another story which I wont delve into. Green Flag for me next month and I'll never use what used to be probably THE best recovery service in the country. Now just a collection of share holders based every other country except this one and they have gone to the dogs.

Anyway, back to the gears - anyone shed any light? I'm sat here with tool box open anticipating these parts arriving...

After having paid massive amount to MB dealership for no repair I decided to start with the relay replacement being the cheapest part. I have read all the comments, (excellent source of information btw) found the recommended relay according the VIN number (A0025425919 from Sequparts) but I do not know where it lives on the van. I took a picture of four relays (front position under the drivers seat) and fusebox from the side. Can anyone please let me know which one is controlling the transmission pump motor?

Also, I am confused by the pricing of the parts. The relay on various web pages seems to be between £20 and £140, pump motor £90 and £520. :oops:Any recommendations?

It is Sprinter 313CDi VIN: WDB9036632R291108

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I have a different layout. Three yellow made in Spain by Hella, part A 002 542 14 19 and one black made in Germany part A 001 542 29 23 (another number on it is 895289000)

As I remember from trying to track down my own relay, the layout under the seat there isn't fixed between vans.

To determine which relay controls the pump motor, I just put a finger on each one til I found which was clicking on and off -- easier if you have the symptoms I described earlier in this thread but you could do the same while it turns on and off once while building pressure at startup.

I am happy with my pump from Sequ Parts. Although I have to admit, I am pretty sure my main issue was the lack of enough shifting fluid. There was only 300 milliliters, while it should have 500 milliliters. Besides that, the shipping from Sequ parts was really fast, all the way to Australia.

Do you still need help locating the exact relay? If you do, I can have a look tomorrow.

I think I may have found the relay - if it is not for something else. It is the first on the right which is getting warm. When the ignition is on, there is a faint sound in the cabin all the time from the water pump for Eberspacher hydronic heater. With my bad hearing, I cannot recognise anything else.

However, when I was measuring the temperature, I was able to select ALL the gears while stationary with engine off - never happened before. Even more bizarre, I could shift from 6th straight to reverse. No automatic. I am now thinking the system must be in some kind of testing mode. MB mechanics said they re-trained the system and I just hope they have not altered something. Automatic was not working when I've driven the van back home from the garage.

The relay replacement was suggested as a generic 4pin with diode. In Halfords they have few of them and I am not sure which one to get.

That is excellent! Thank you very much for making this video. I am going to start with the relay and take it from there.

I bought the relay and replaced it. Results of short ½hour test drive: transmission behaves normally with faster changing times between N,A and R than before. I can still go though all the gears with the engine off. I will report next week.

BTW it is very easy to find the corresponding (5 pin) relay just by pulling it out. When it is not fitted, there is no gear indication on the dash.

So, there is no need for the whole week testing. The problem is still there after relay replacement although not as severe; or I was just lucky. I will be ordering the oil, possibly motor and accumulator too.

I am happy to report that the issue is sorted. I wanted to make sure it is done in one go so I bought almost everything connected with the problem. Oil, pump motor, accumulator, relay and pressure sensor. I believe it was mainly the motor but being self-employed I could not be without the van any longer. It took me 6 weeks to repair it (2 weeks wasted with MB dealership, 2 weeks diagnostics before and 1 week waiting for the spares) with total costs of about £1900 from which I paid £800 to MB Rygor dealership in Heathrow for computer says no result.

From the start I braved to go out to work but it was getting steadily worse until I had to be towed home. The van after the repair is functioning as normal thanks to my mechanic to whom I forwarded all the writes up from Cavah (many thanks!) and other members describing the troubleshooting. Without this information, I would probably believe that there is no fix and taking a loan to get a replacement van for my very well maintained and kitted out 313Cdi LWB sprinter with only 171000M on the clock.

Maybe I should mention that the replacement relay from Halfords for £5 is good enough substitute, does not have to be ordered from Germany and it is for the price a very good starting point.
